DEF is an acronym for Diesel Exhaust Fluid.
Diesel Exhaust Fluid is 32.5% technical-grade Urea and 67.5% purified water.
It is not hazardous, and is used to aid in Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR), which is a vehicle emissions control technology designed to reduce diesel engine emissions.
DEF is required on all 2010 and later model year vehicles. 2014 model year off highway equipment also requires DEF. The EPA requires all vehicle manufacturers to put appropriate measures in place to ensure the diesel vehicles cannot run without DEF.
What are the facts?
- DEF is not toxic, harmful, or dangerous
- DEF is not an additive
- DEF is not difficult to use or find
- DEF is stored in a separate tank from the diesel tank
