Sweet and savory selections your grill has been waiting for!

watermelon

Summer means the kick off of BBQ season!
You’re likely the master of meats like burgers, dogs, brats and chicken-kabobs… But did you know that many fruits are excellent grilled, either as a dessert or side dish?

Whoa! Right?
There are a lot of fruits that taste delicious after spending a few minutes on the grill. Scroll on down and pick out one or two to add to your next grill session.

Peaches

Did you know that peaches are probably the most popular grilling fruit?

Peaches go perfectly in salads, salsas, and as a sweet garnish for chicken, pork, or steak. To add a whole other level of flavour you can drizzle with balsamic. For dessert, scoop some vanilla ice cream on top of your grilled peaches and let the combination of steamy and cold melt in your mouth.

Pineapple

Pineapple is a hands down winner on the grill, especially when you use fresh pineapple. Slice it into rings and toss right on the grill, or cube it and slide it onto skewers with sweet bell peppers and chicken. Pineapple also fares well in your favorite smoker. The smoky flavors go perfectly with the sweet and tangy taste pineapples are famous for.

Watermelon

Ummm, are you surprised we’d say watermelon? True, watermelon is not top of mind when you fire up the BBQ, but you’d be surprised at the intense flavors that pour from a grilled slice of watermelon! Go ahead and leave the rind on, or remove it – it’s up to you… Grilled watermelon goes great with shrimp.

Fruit grilling tips:

  • Don’t forget about your fruit on the grill! You’ll want to stay close by since most fruit is delicate and will be ready fast. Quick and delicious.
  • Grill over indirect heat. Trying new fruit takes some practice. Keep an eye on fruit that grills quickly or falls apart easily. Avoid putting directly over flame or coals.
  • Brush with olive oil. This will add an extra dimension of flavour, and prevent your fruit from sticking to the grill.
  • Don’t be afraid to try other fruits! Strawberries, apples, bananas and cantaloupe are all delicious when grilled!

It goes without saying, grilling fruit is a great way to impress your guests, add new flavor to your family recipes, and get some extra nutrition in your diet.
